Opinion: Peoples of Belarus and Russia are always ready to help each other

The peoples of Belarus and Russia are always ready to help and support each other, Mogilev Oblast Governor Anatoly Isachenko said as he met with Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov on 20 April, BelTA has learned.

Belarus and Russia enjoy long-standing friendly relations. “We really are the nations that are ready to help and support each other. Sanctions pressure has brought us closer to each other even more and has given us the understanding that we must live and develop together. The current situation will be an impetus for even closer integration, because the period of restrictions on foreign markets is a time of great opportunities for mutual import substitution and strengthening of our cooperative ties,” the governor stressed.

For Mogilev Oblast, and Belarus in general, Russia remains the most important strategic partner in all the areas. Russia accounted for 57.3% of Mogilev Oblast's foreign trade and reached $2.4 billion in 2021. The growth of the foreign trade almost made up 30% in 2021 and exceeded 40% from the start of 2022. Almost the entire range of products made by the Mogilev Oblast enterprises is exported to Russia, including car tires, elevators, cement, chemical fibers, fabrics, agricultural machinery, and food products.

According to Anatoly Isachenko, the current situation in the world has oriented the two countries to look for more opportunities for mutual cooperation and deepening of economic integration. The parties praised the activity of Russian companies in the Belarusian region. More than 330 organizations with Russian capital operate in Mogilev Oblast. One of them is Omsk Carbon Mogilev, an enterprise that produces technical carbon. More than RUB5 billion was allocated for the implementation of this investment project.

As always, special attention is paid to strengthening interregional cooperation. The Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee has concluded agreements with 26 regions of Russia. The most active cooperative ties have been established with the bordering Smolensk and Bryansk oblasts, Moscow and Moscow Oblast, St. Petersburg, Leningrad and Novosibirsk oblasts and Primorye Territory. “It is the interregional cooperation that is the basis for further development of mutual trade and cooperation in the market of production, investment and workforce,” the governor said.

Anatoly Isachenko outlined several priority areas of cooperation, including the work to develop a unified information base, which will help the subjects of the two countries learn about the technical potential and capabilities of each other to quickly establish cooperative ties. Besides, in the center of attention is the development of mechanisms to provide loans to import substitution projects, setting common price policy for raw materials, joint youth policy and patriotic education, development of tourism.

The two-day program of Russian Ambassador Boris Gryzlov's visit included meetings and visits to regional enterprises with the purpose of promoting cooperation between the two countries. On the first day of the visit the delegation visited the Mogilev free economic zone, got familiar with the operation and products of Babushkina Krynka. The second day of the program envisaged a visit to the Belarusian-Russian University and Mogilevliftmash.
